Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage

The dog, called Prince, was an intelligent animal and a slave to Williams. From morning till night, when Williams was at home, Prince never left his sight, practically ignoring all other members of the family. The dog had a number of clearly defined duties, for which Williams had patiently trained him and, like the good pupil he was, Prince lived for the chance to demonstrate his abilities.
When Williams wanted to put on his boots, he would murmur" boots" and within seconds the dog would drop them at his feet. At nine every morning, Prince ran off to the general store in the village, returning shortly not only with Williams ' daily paper but with a half-ounce packet of Williams' favorite tobacco, John Rainey's Mixed. A gun dog by breed, Prince possessed a large soft mouth specially evolved for the safe carrying of hunted creatures, so the paper and the tobacco came to no harm, never even showing a tooth mark.
Williams was a railway man, an engine driver, and he wore a blue uniform. which smelled of oil and oil fuel. He had to work at odd times—"days" , "late days" or" nights". Over the years Prince got to know these periods of work and rest, knew when his master would leave the house and return, and the dog did not waste this knowledge. If Williams overslept, as he often did, Prince barked at the bedroom door until he woke, much to the annoyance of the family. On his return, Williams' slippers were brought to him, the paper and tobacco too if previously under livered.
A curious thing happened to Williams during the snow and ice of last winter. One evening he slipped and fell on the icy pavement somewhere between the village and his home. He was so badly shaken that he stayed in bed for three days; and not until he got up and dressed again did he discover that he had lost his wallet containing over fifty pounds. The house was turned upside down in the search, but the wallet was not found. However, two days later — that was five days after the fall — Prince dropped the wallet into William's hand. Very muddy, stained and wet through, the little case still contained fifty three pounds, Williams' driving license and a few other papers. Where the dog had found it no one could tell, but found it he had and recognized it probably by the faint oily smell on the worn leather.

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage

Most people who enjoy movies do not really care how they are made. They want to enjoy a good story. Movie producer and director George Lucas wants people to see the best-made movie possible. So, his latest Star Wars movie was made without using film.

Star Wars:Attack of the Clones was made using digital cameras. A digital camera does not use traditional film. It captures an image on videotape. The images recorded on videotape are then placed in a computer.

George Lueas says that using digital cameras permits him" to have much more control over the final product. For example, the image can be changed after it is placed in a computer. An expert can change color, add or take out objects, add people or beings who are not real. Much of what is seen in the new Star Wars movie is not real. Huge buildings, spacecraft and alien beings from other worlds were produced in a computer.

Movie experts say digital technology is the real future of the motion picture industry. A theater will no longer have to wait days or weeks to show a new movie. Theaters will be able to receive copies of new movies by linking computers. Or they will use small computer disks to get a copy of the movie.

When the new Star Wars movie wag released last month, only 94 theatersaround the world had the digital equipment needed to show it. So Mr. Lucas' company produced about 6,000 copies of the new digital movie on traditional film for release in most theaters. However, most people who have seen the movie say these film copies are a much better quality than other filmed movies.

Critics say the new digital technology is very costly. Many theater owners will not buy the new technology, yet many of the people who worked on the new Star Wars movie say they would not like to work with film again. They said using digital equipment was faster, and videotape is much less costly than film. One cameraman said the director of a movie can immediately see what was just recorded, something impossible to do with film.

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage

Climate, more than any other single factor, determines the distribution of life on earth. Climatic boundaries establish the limits within which organisms can survive. Plants, even more than animals, must be well adapted to climate in order to survive. They cannot move about or take shelter but must be equipped to endure whatever weather conditions are likely to occur. In the harsh conditions of the tundra (冻土地带) , for example, low growing mosses, and a few flowering plants all hug the ground for shelter from icy winds.
Animals, despite their ability to move about and find shelter, are just as much influenced by climate as plants are. Creatures such as the camel and the penguin are so highly specialized that they have an extremely limited distribution. Others, such as bears, are flexible enough to adapt to a broad range of climates. Ocean-dwelling organisms are just as sensitive to climatic changes – in this case temperature and salinity (盐度) – as land animals. Reef corals can survive only in clear warm seawater. Certain foraminifers are so sensitive to change in their environment that their presence can be taken as an index of sea temperature. Human beings are among the least specialized of all animals and can live almost anywhere. Their clothes and their homes act as a sort of “miniature climate” that can be taken with them everywhere.

  • Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Plants on the tundra grow close to the ground to minimize exposure to the cold.

B.Animals must be more adapted to climate than plants in order to survive.

C.Human beings are as such influenced by climate as plants and animals are.

D.Reef corals can live almost anywhere.

52.Which of the following can be found in the greatest number of different climate areas on Earth?

A.Reef corals    B.Penguins     C.Bears      D.Camels

53.It can be inferred from the passage that foraminifers are a           .

A.kind of weather pattern                         B.form of sea life

C.species of tundra plant                          D.small bear

54.Why can human beings survive almost everywhere on Earth?

A.They have learned how to live in different climates.

B.Their body temperature can vary with the temperature.

C.They have advanced forms of transportation.

D.Their shelters and clothing help them to adapt to the environment.

55.The best title of the passage is           .

A.How to Adapt to the Environment

  B.Plants and Animals on Earth

C.Climate and the Distribution of Life on Earth

  D.Environment and Life on Earth

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:

To swim across the English Channel takes at least nine hours. It’s a hard work and it makes you short of breath. To fly over the Channel takes only twenty minutes (as long as you’re not held up at the airport), but it’s an expensive way to travel. You can travel by hovercraft if you don’t mind the noise, and that takes forty minutes. Otherwise you can go by boat, if you remember your sea-sickness ills. All these means of transport have their problems and the weary (不耐烦的)traveler often dreams of being able to drive to France in his own car. “Not possible”, you say. Well wait a minute. People are once again considering the idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge.

This time, the Greater London Council is looking into the possibility of building a Channel link straight to London. A bridge would cost far more than a tunnel, but you would be able to go by rail or by car on a bridge, whereas a tunnel would provide a rail link only.

Why is this idea being discussed again? Is Britain becoming more conscious of the need for links with Europe as a result of joining the EEC(欧共体)?Well , perhaps. The main reason, though, is that a tunnel or bridge would reach the twenty square kilometers of London’s disused dockland (船坞地). A link from London to the continent would stimulate trade and re-vitalize (使…重新具有活力)the port, and would make London a main trading center in Europe. With a link over the Channel , you could buy your fish and chips in England and be able to eat them in France while they were still warm!

(    )56.Swimming across the Channel takes less than four hours.

(    )57.The idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge is a very new one.

(    )58.It is considered to be more difficult to swim across the channel than any other means.

(    )59.A tunnel or bridge would only reach as far as the coast.

(    )60.Channel link would make London more prosperous again.

Some individuals and citizens' groups have expressed concern about the level of violence in television programs, particularly in action-adventure series and cartoons. They argue that viewers, especially children, may learn to see violence as the only way to resolve conflicts.

Early experimental researchers compared the play of children who had seen aggressive behavior on television with the play of a control group of children who had watched nonviolent programs. Concern was intensified by findings that indicated a higher level of aggressive play in the violent-television group. Other researchers attempted to determine whether violent programs simply stimulated higher energy levels in children or actually caused them to learn violent and antisocial behavior. The results of different studies conflicted. Some researchers claimed that televised violence actually had a positive cathartic effect, allowing some viewers to release heightening tensions; these findings however, were not confirmed in further studies. Other scholars pointed out that both prosocial and. antisocial behavior can be learned from television.

Social scientists find .it especially difficult to assess accurately the subtle, cumulative effects of vie-wing a broad variety of television programs throughout childhood. Distinguishing the possible effects of television from other influences at home and at school is also difficult. Current research suggests that moderately higher levels of antisocial behavior can be traced to television viewing, but further study needs to be done to confirm it.

Because of the long-standing tradition in the U.S. of freedom of speech and of the press, the government would probably not attempt to directly limit or censor the appearance of violence on television. Among the networks and producers, pressure from concerned citizens continues to be balanced by the increasing popularity of high-energy action-adventure programs.

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage

People travel for a lot of reason. Some tourists go to see battlefields or religious shrines. Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their picture taken in front of famous places. But most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.

Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money and put up with a lot of inconveniences for the sun because they have so little of it. Residents of cities like London, Copenhagen , and Amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year in the rain. This is the reason the Mediterranean has always attracted them. Every summer, more than 25 million people travel to Mediterranean resort and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason :sun!

The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economies of Mediteranean countries. Italy’s 30,000 hotels are booked solid every summer. And 13 million people camp out on French beaches, parks and roadsides. Spain’s long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else. 37 million tourists visit yearly, or one tourist for every person living in Spain.

But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can handle. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. And with increased tourism, it’s getting worse. The French can’t figure out what to do with all the garbage left by campers around St. Tropez. And in many places , swimming is dangerous because of pollution.

None of this, however, is spoiling anyone’s fun. The Mediteranean gets more popular every year with tourists. Obviously, they don’t go there for clean water and solitude. They tolerate traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don’t even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, it’s still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or Oslo.

46. The writer seems to imply that Europeans travel mostly for the reason that__________.

  A. they want to see historic remains or religious spots.

  B. they are interested in different cultural traditions and social customs.

  A. to show that they are not good cities in terms of geography and climate.

  B. to tell us how wealthy their residents are.

  C. to suggest that these cities lack places of historic interest and scenic beauty.

  D. to prove that they have got more tourism than they an handle.

  C. every person living in Spain has to take care of a tourist.

  D. every Spanish is visited by a tourist every year.

50. According to the passage, which of the following factors might spoil the tourists’ fun at Mediterranean resorts and beaches?

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage

Trees are useful to man in three important ways:they provide him with wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts and floods.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important.76)In his eagerness to make money from trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And besides, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.

This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil---allowing the rain to sink in ---and also bind the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.

Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships , with which to gain itself an empire. It set up the empire but, without its trees, its soil became poor and it grew weak. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced with floods and starvation.

51. What is the most important service of trees to man according to the passage?

  A. They help him make money.

  B. They give him wood and other products.

  C. They help him prevent droughts and floods.

  D. They give him shade.

52. Why do forests in many parts of the world slowly disappear?

  A. New trees are not looked after properly.

  B. Many trees have been cut down by man.

  C. Man has not paid enough attention to planting trees.

  D. All of the above.

53. Why did the country mentioned in the passage suffer from floods and starvation?

  A. Because an empire was set up.

  B. Because the empire fell to pieces.

  C. Because it lost all its trees.

  D. Because too much had been spent on wars.

54. Why does land become desert after all trees are cut down?

  A. Because nothing remains on land except floods.

  B. Because there are no longer trees to keep the rain and protect the top-soil.

  C. Because too much rain sinks in and washes away the top-soil.

  D. Because roots of the trees break up the soil.

55. What does the author tell us in this passage?

  A. How trees help prevent droughts and floods.

  B. The relationship between trees and man.

  C. How an empire fell to pieces in ancient times.

  D. A story of trees.

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:

Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California's Santa Ana Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home. I couldn't reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes, I figured I'd just head east. A bus pulled up, and I asked the driver how far she was going. “Four more lights,” she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night. She dropped me off at the end of her route and told me which bus to look for. After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up. There was no lighted number above its windshield(挡风玻璃). It was out of service. But the door opened, and I was surprised to find that it was the same driver. “I just can't leave you here,” she said. “This isn't the nicest place. I'll give you a ride home.” “You'll drive me home in the bus?” I asked, perplexed (困惑). “No, I'll take you in my car,” she said. “It's a long way,” I protested. “Come on, ” she said. “I have nothing else to do.” As we drove from the station in her car, she began telling me a story. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A good Samaritan picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car. “I'm just passing the favor along, ” she said. When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn't hear of it. “That wouldn't make it a favor, ” she said. “Just do something nice for somebody. Pass it along.”

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.

Everybody gets stressed from time to time. Different people feel stress in different ways some ways. Some ways of dealing with stress don’t solve much. But other ways can start you on the road to solving your problem or at least feeling better.

Try taking these five steps next time you are stressed.

When you need help, turn to people who care about you. Talk to a trusty adult, such as a parent a relative, a school adviser, or a coach. And don’t forget about your friends. They might be worried about the same test or have had similar problems, such as dealing with the death of a beloved pet.

It’s easy to let your feelings go wild when you’re upset. Notice your feelings. Name them – for example, “I am so angry!” And find a way to express them. Do breathing exercises, listen to music, write a diary, play with pet, go for a walk or a bike ride, or do whatever helps you be in a better mood(心情).

Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they blame it on themselves. Oh dear, that’s not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don’t blame in on yourself. Be kind to yourself and ask for the helping hand or pat on the back that you need – and deserve – to get you through the difficult situation you’re facing.

After you’re calm and you have support from adults and friends, it’s time to get down to business. You need to figure out what problem is. Even if you can’t solve all of it.

Most stress is temporary. It may not seem like it when you’re in the middle of stressful situation, but stress does go away, often when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.
